Production Lapping is equipped with state of the art lapping and free abrasive machining systems, which allows us to take on virtually any flat surfacing application. From single side lapping to double side lapping & polishing, from parts as small as .125” in diameter up parts large as 60” in diameter, to parts as thin as .002. Production Lapping has the skill & technology to meet even the most demanding flat surfacing requirements.

Production Lapping has always been a leader in flat lapping technologies; for example we were the first job shop in the U.S. with double side lapping capabilities. We work in the aerospace, medical, automotive, semiconductor, thin film head, fiber optic, mechanical seal, and commercial industries, just to name a few.

The applications for lapping vary from the ultra precision that most people think of when they think of lapping to first surfacing on a casting to high stock removal that can replace a grinding or milling or a turning operation and all this can be easily done where little or no stress is introduced into the part.

Double Side Lapping is an exceptionally precise, finishing or semi-finishing process capable of lapping and polishing both sides of a work piece simultaneously. Double side lapping is versatile enough to handle traditional metalworking requirements as well as the processing of thin, fragile materials. Due to the minimal amount of machine down pressure, required parts are processed with no heat and virtually no stresses introduced into parts.     For the medical industry which require machining, heat treating, grinding and lapping to a tolerance of +/-.00002
  • Hard Anodized Tape Guides
    Machined, rough lapped, hard anodized and are then finish lapped to a flatness of .000011 and a surface finish of 2 Ra.
  • Titanium Undersea Light Housing
    Machined from solid Titanium bar stock these housings required extensive programming and machining. With numerous grooves and cross-holes, internal and external threading this is the type of part Production Lapping excels at.
  • Turbocharger Bearing Housing
    These Cast Iron housings are modified to customer specifications, holding a .0002 (.005mm) bore tolerance, with multiple internal grooves.
  • CMP Polishing Machine Retaining Ring
    Machined from 316 Stainless Steel, these rings are used in the polishing process for Silicon Wafers. We machined the rings from solid bar stock and then bonded a PPS plastic ring to our ring and then finished machining and lapping.

Fine Grinding

Fine Grinding which is also know as Flat Honing or Fixed Abrasive Flat Lapping is a modern precision stock removal process that offers speeds up to 10 times faster than conventional lapping yet still providing similar flatness, parallelism, surface finish and size tolerances.  Applications, which require moderate to high stock removal while maintaining close dimensional and surface finish requirements is where this process is at it’s best.

Fine grinding can accommodate almost any material such as:

  • Metal – Tool Steels, Cast Iron, Aluminum, Carbon Steels, Tungsten Alloys, Sintered Metals.
  • Ceramics- Alumina, Silicon Carbide, Silicon Nitride, Zirconia
